A
story is told of a mother's dramatic rescue of her child. Workmen were
blasting rock in a quarry. One day after they had attached the fuse and
returned to a safe place, having given an alarm, they saw a three year
old boy wandering across the open space were danger threatened.
Every
passing second meant that death was closing in on him. The workmen
called to the child and waved their arms, but he only looked on their
strange antics with amusement. No man dared run forward, knowing that
the explosion was only seconds away.
The
child most certainly would have been killed had his mother not appeared
at this moment of crisis. Quickly taking the situation in a glance, she
did what her heart dictated. She did not run toward her son or yell to
frighten him. Instead she knelt down and opened
her arms with a smile invited him to come.
Instantly the child ran toward his mother and when the air shook with
the gigantic explosion, he was safe in his mothers arms.

What
a wonderful picture this portrays of the grace of God. The world is
filled with life- threatening danger. Life is full of turmoil and
trouble. Forgiveness, comfort, and peace appear
to many to be elusive.
Here
at Natrona Heights Presbyterian Church, we
look up in our sanctuary and see the Cross of Christ boldly proclaimed,
we see the open arms of our new chancel, and perceive the wonder of
"Christ, the Good Shepherd." All these images testify to
Jesus, with out-stretched arms, inviting us to His safe comfort and
care.
This
is God's grace found in the invitation of our Lord, "Come,
unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you
rest."
